10 Breakout Stars of 2008
According to Entertainment Weekly, Robert Pattinson the star of Twilight, and nine more celebrities, are this year’s break out stars or stars who’ve made it big this year and should have a promising career ahead. I wonder what’s their career going to be like in this fleeting show business in the next couple of years?
And would you agree with this list’s last choice though?
Anyway, for the complete list, it’s after the jump…
- ROBERT PATTINSON
Cast as Edward Cullen, the gentlemanly vampire of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, the 22-year-old British actor became instant bedroom-poster material — before he even spoke a word on screen. Previously known for playing earnest Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Pattinson seems unfazed by this new mania, which has involved Twihards lingering around his Los Angeles apartment. ”These little teenage girls will sometimes be camped outside, but it’s fine. There’s something about people who like this book — they’re always extraordinarily polite. If they were old men, I’d probably move.” - DEMI LOVATO
Talk about a sweet 16. After rocketing to fame this June as the costar of the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock (opposite tween-dream troika the Jonas Brothers), the 16-year-old Dallas native released her debut album. Don’t Forget made an impressive No. 2 Billboard bow, proving her to be a genuine double threat. ”Music comes naturally,” she admits. ”But acting is a mind challenge, and I have a huge passion for it.” With a Camp Rock sequel in development and both the original series Sonny With a Chance and the film Princess Protection Program due next year, it looks like 2009 could be even sweeter. - RUSSELL BRAND
Best known for playing the girlfriend-snatching rock god Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and for hosting this year’s VMAs, the British comedian is a refreshing, rakish alternative to his shlubby American counterparts. Though he recently quit his BBC radio show after his lewd on-air prank calls provoked outrage, the 33-year-old is keeping busy filming the Marshall spin-off, Get Him to the Greek. ”I’m an egotistical man,” says Brand, who plans to have a long and prosperous movie career. ”If I’m only in it for a short time, it’s almost worse than not being in it at all.” - ESTELLE
Her U.S. debut, Shine, features collaborations with everyone from Mark Ronson to will.i.am. Her Kanye West duet, ”American Boy,” has notched more than 1.4 million digital sales. And she recently held it down as the only woman on tour with Gym Class Heroes and the Roots. So how does the British soul siren, 28, look back at 2008? ”I’ll remember it for never being in my house,” she jokes. But that’s not a complaint. ”It took me four friggin’ years to get this s— out. I can’t be mad at anything right now.” - SHAILENE WOODLEY
Foisting another pregnant teen on a (barely) post-Juno world could’ve birthed disaster. But ABC Family pulled it off with The Secret Life of the American Teenager, thanks to Woodley. Its first season this summer scored 4 million viewers, but the gawkily pretty 17-year-old, whose character’s tortured silences speak volumes, refuses to take credit: ”I think teens respond, honestly, to the fact that sex is mentioned.” - DAVID COOK
David Cook felt sure he’d lost American Idol when Simon Cowell criticized his final song choice. ”When Simon said, ‘You should have sung ”Billie Jean” [again],’ it was a rare moment where I wanted to defend myself. I’d rather fall flat on my face on my own terms.” Instead, he won 55 million votes. Now the raspy belter, 25, has put that pride into his self-titled album. ”This record is me. I have found a calm in it that people thought I had on the show.” - TRISTAN WILDS
Wilds, who projects an easy warmth as Dixon on The CW’s reboot of 90210, had an important decision to make before filming began: whether to follow in the follicular footsteps of previously sideburned alums Luke Perry and Jason Priestley. ”I’m like, ‘Hmm. Should I go with the ham hocks or not?”’ the 19-year-old says with a laugh. But the former Wire actor is far more interested in mirroring the career of Will Smith, one of the producers of this year’s The Secret Life of Bees, in which Wilds costarred. He’s got the TV zip code right. After all, Smith’s big break came after he moved west and became the prince of a town called Bel-Air. - KAT DENNINGS
She made angst funny in The House Bunny and became the thinking teen’s dream girl in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, all while steering clear of the TMZ scene. Now Dennings is in demand and has her pick of projects — next up is The Dream of the Romans with Olivia Thirlby (Juno). But there’s one part of the Hollywood game that the 22-year-old still hasn’t mastered: red carpets. ”What am I supposed to do with my hands? I’ve been trying to figure it out. Every time I see a picture of myself, I’m like, ‘God, why did I…? Ugh!”’ - CHELSEA HANDLER
”There are not many people on E! who also have a New York Times best-selling book,” says the 33-year-old comic. ”Unless Kim Kardashian comes out with a pop-up book about her a– , I think my position is secure.” It ought to be, since Chelsea Lately is not only a demographics winner but also the first successful late-night talk show hosted by a woman. Still, even Handler, who recently inked a deal to costar in ABC’s adaptation of the Internet sitcom In the Motherhood, thinks it’s all a little much: ”I’m annoyed by the sound of my own voice and have been for a couple months now,” she says, laughing. That’s okay, we’re not. - ANGEL
Some actresses dread the moment when a director asks them to get undressed for a scene. For Angel, the 4-year-old canine who landed the title role in the $88 million-and-counting hit Beverly Hills Chihuahua, the hard part was putting on the clothes. As the prissy, pampered Chloe, Angel sported an enviable wardrobe of hats, shoes, and jewels. But don’t expect to see her trotting down Robertson Boulevard with a Fendi doggie bag. ”She’d rather run around and play with sticks than hang out in little pink dresses,” says trainer Mike Alexander. ”She’s more of a dog’s dog.”
