The New Dr. Who
So, I’m not much of a Dr. Who viewer. This is that TV sci-fi series from the BBC that has earned quite a cult following online. The last Dr. Who I saw was from 2006 (when Eccleston was the Doctor). And if you aren’t aware of it, every other year (at least, as far as I know) they change the actor who plays the Doctor.
Yesterday, fan sites were busy with activity, after it was announced who the new guy is going to be; the 11th Dr. Who; the guy replacing David Tennant (I hear there are huge shoes to fill as David Tennant was quite a favorite among fans).
The new Dr. Who is someone named Matt Smith, who will make his debut in 2010.
The actor apparently auditioned for this part and BBC liked him from the beginning. Says Piers Wenger from BBC — “It was abundantly clear that he had that ‘Doctor-ness’ about him. You are either the Doctor or you are not.”
Matt Smith is the youngest actor to play Dr. Who, and while quite familiar with the British audience since he has done a handful of TV shows there, American fans of the series are probably hearing his name for the first time.
In response to this news, the actor has released this statement —
“I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling. David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show’s illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who watch it. I really cannot wait.”
The complete details of this is at the BBC.
